This is The Elections Centre

Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher are Associate Members of Nuffield College, Oxford. The College is synonymous with the General Election Studies Series co-authored for many years by Sir David Butler.  Our aim in creating this website is to establish a major resource for local election data in the UK.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

New data visualisation for Local Election Results

Lawrence Ware, who helped to design and build the local elections database, has a new website, Universal Ballot Database. Follow the link for viewing ward level maps which show the name, party and votes of the top-placed candidate at the most recent election for that ward. It also shows the electorate and turnout. The user can switch between different map views; the satellite option is particularly useful in our view.

Another feature of Universal Ballot Database is a searchable ballot results facility. This prompts the user, either singly or in combination for placename (local authority, parliamentary constituency, ward etc); candidate name (a candidate’s surname for example) and finally, party. This is a very powerful tool for exploring election results!!

Send any feedback to us and we’ll forward it on to Lawrence – contact@electionscentre.co.uk

New data project for Local Election Result enthusiasts

Alan Willis, a major contributor to the Local Elections Database, has data sets for the non-county boroughs 1945-1972.  Alan compiled the three volume set of County Borough Results for this period (limited copies are still available if you email us) but is extending local election coverage to the smaller boroughs – Abergavenny to Yeovil.

In some cases the results are reasonably good but we need help to fill in the gaps.  As more regional and local newspaper archives appear online this is a great project for anyone interested in their town’s local politics, party competition, candidates etc.

The page is here: Non County Borough Election Results 1945-1972

If you’re interested in this project then email us.

The website is a public resource thanks to a recent grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ES/L010011/1).

Much of the information derives from the British Local Elections Database, a project initiated in 1985.  This has been supported at different times by the ESRC, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Electoral Commission and EMAP plc.

Thanks to users that continue to report mistakes (minor) and omissions (oops, sorry about that). We now have limited resources to correct these mistakes so have patience.
